Surface and subsurface location beacons

Radio - ARGOS - ORBCOMM

Planet Ocean are pleased to announce their appointment as an approved re-seller of the SIS range of mooring beacons using ARGOS, UHF radio, ORBCOMM and light.

The surface and subsurface beacons have recently been enhanced by the addition of the MRB (Marine Recovery Beacon) range, which includes a GPS/UHF beacon, A strobe light beacon, and a new low cost, deep Argos beacon.

SMM Range:

Sub-surface Mooring Monitoring remotely monitors underwater moorings that may accidentally rise to the surface. If the mooring breaks, the platform floats to the surface and starts transmitting via the ARGOS Satellite. Three versions cover 500m, 2000m and 6000m depths, and will transmit for at least 3 months when on the surface.

Manufactured from titanium, and with the antenna protected within a plastic radome.

SMM Case:

Sturdy aluminium transit case for storage and transport of SMM 2000 and 6000 beacons. The case has compartments for up to ten batteries, tools and maintenance parts.

GPS Radio Beacon GRB 6000:     NEW

  • Takes the system's position from GPS fixes

  • Transmits these by VHF radio to the search vessel

  • The receiver on-board the ship uses a commercially available PDA

ARB 6000 Argos Radio Beacon:     NEW

The ARB-6000 is a new, lighter, cheaper version of the SMM-6000, but with reduced transmitting endurance.  It is offered as part of the new MRB (Marine Recovery Beacon) series of products.

The ARB remotely monitors the surfacing of underwater moorings, deep-sea landers, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) or other marine platforms operational under water.

Compared with the SMM, the ARB is more flexible, smaller, and cheaper in price than a SMM 6000. Use of a three battery power supply produces a medium term transmission time, rather than the long term of the SMM 6000 powered by 10 D-type Lithium cells. However, transmission time reduction is not as great as that for power because a more efficient, lower power PTT is used.

SLB 6000 Strobe Light Beacon:     NEW

The SLB is a Xenon Strobe Light Beacon. It can be deployed for very long periods in water depth up to 6000 m. If one uses the Kantseals, which are standard from the factory, the mooring time is mainly limited by the self-discharge of the batteries.

The beacon helps the finding of deep-sea landers and underwater moorings that have been released acoustically on a specific command or other surfaced marine platforms as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) or autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). This assistance is useful at night and with line of sight conditions. With additional equipment of the MRB (Marine Recovery Beacon) series of products, one has the means to recover one's instruments at any time under any environmental circumstances. When submerged the strobe is inactive and will switch on when surfaced. To better attract attention, the flasher can be set to permanent flashing or periodic bursts.

ASB Argos Surface Beacon:

The Argos Surface Beacon is a watertight, battery powered Argos transmitter. Applications are the monitoring of moored buoys and location of floating objects. Should the device to which the beacon is attached drift outside of a preset "Geo-Fence" or "Watch circle" the drift will be reported to the owner via the ARGOS message service.  A warning is also generated if no signal is received from the beacon.

OM ORBCOMM Monitor:

The ORBCOMM Monitor is an intelligent and self contained package with GPS location, bidirectional ORBCOMM satellite link, and a serial interface to other subsystems. This unit is available in different housings for underwater or surface applications, e.g. ORBCOMM SMM, ORBCOMM Surface Beacon, ORBCOMM Drifter etc.

Applications include:

  • Monitoring of sub surface moorings
  • Monitoring of surface moorings
  • Location determination of drifters
  • Analog and digital data acquisition of surface or subsurface environmental data by the optional ODAM ORBCOMM Data Acquisition Module
